Community of Jesus’ Compassion (CJC)

Introduction to the community

Founded in the Diocese of Natal by a sister from the Community of the Holy Name in Zululand, CJC have been based in Newcastle and Ixopo. However, the sisters have now settled at New Hanover, which is half an hour’s drive from the cathedral at the city of Pietermaritzburg. The main work of the sisters is evangelising in the local parish, prison, Christian community radio station and children’s ministry. The Sisters care for few children now due to some constraints. On the 19th December 1998, the first professions within the community were received. The Community’s formal recognition by the Church of the Province of South Africa followed in 2000 with the first life professions. In 2006, Sister Thandi became the first nun in the diocese to be ordained to the stipendiary ministry.
