Society of Saint Francis (SSF), European Province

Introduction to the community

The Society of St Francis has diverse origins in a number of Franciscan groups that drew together during the 1930s to found one Franciscan Society. SSF in its widest definition includes First Order Brothers, First Order Sisters (CSF), Second Order Sisters (OSC) and a Third Order. The First Order shares a common life of prayer, fraternity and a commitment to issues of justice, peace and the integrity of creation. In its larger houses, this includes accommodation for short-term guests; in the city houses, the Brothers are engaged in a variety of ministries, chaplaincies and care for the poor and marginalised. The Brothers are also available for retreat work, for counselling and for sharing in the task of mission in parishes and schools. They also undertake work in Europe and there are houses in the Americas, Australasia, Korea and the Pacific.
